RESUMO

500 salmonella cultures isolated during 1952 and 1953 have been typed. Seventeen different types were found, of which the most common were S. typhi, S. typhimurium, S. oranienburg and S. derby. The strains most frequently found in Jamaica are almost exclusively those frequently found in the U.S.A.S. paratyphi B was not isolated. S. saint paul, S. sandiego, S. manhattan, S. bonariensis, S. newington, S. senftenburg and S. miami have been reported for the first time in Jamaica. A survey have been made of the different Salmonell types found in animals. The following strains, as well as S. typhi, have been isolated from blood: S. typhimurium, S. enteritidis, S. cholerae-suis, S. derby. S. newington was found in the faeces, blood, C.S.F. and puss from an abscess in a baby. one strain of S. enteritidis showing late fermentation of maltose has been reported (AU)

RESUMO

Typhoid cultures isolated during 1950-54 in Jamaica were phage typed and only 4 types have been found. Type E1 is the most common and Type T the next most frequent strain. The types prevalent here are among those most common in North America, Africa, Europe and it is likely that their origin here may be from the movement of population to and from those countries, mainly the United States of America, together with the transfer of population from Africa here during the past two centuries. Classification of typhoid strains by their biochemical types has also been done and it is put forward as a possible temporary epidemiological method for use in areas where laboratory facilities for phage typing are not readily available. The biochemical classification recommended by Kristensen was used. Our results have been compared with Kristensen's report and it could be shown that the percentage of these three sub-types found by him is different from that found in Jamaica (AU)

RESUMO

The case of abdominal actinomycosis is, as far as we are aware, the first to be recorded from Jamaica. In addition, no reports on the occurrence of gangrene of the scrotum are known from this island. The presence of a member of the family, Pseudomonadaceae, which is at present under study is intriguing. Its possible role as the cause of the gangrene is discussed (AU)

RESUMO

An acute fulminating septicemic illness has been described. The lesions consist of a metastatic necrosis of muscle tissue. The causative organism is believed to be a member of the pseudomonadaceae family. Details of a further study of the disease from the human, bacteriological and experimental aspects will be published later (AU)

RESUMO

The literature on salmonellosis, excluding typhoid and paratyphoid fevers, is briefly reviewed, with special reference to the age incidence, nutrition of the patient, geographical distribution, sources of infection, clinical picture and treatment. 40 cases of salmonellosis in Jamaican children are described. These comprised: (i) acute gastro-enteritis (20 cases), (ii) chronic relapsing gastro-enteritis (18 cases), (iii) 'Salmonella fever' (1 case), (iv) Salmonella meningitis (1 case). The clinical picture, bacteriology and response to treatment are described. (Summary)
